One of the most amazing spots in San Diego, La Jolla is truly one of the most beautiful spots on the planet.

La Jolla Bay
Set on a rocky peninsula at the bottom of a magnificent bay of sandstone cliffs, La Jolla is nothing but spectacular.
There are several wonderful coves and small beaches just a short walk from downtown La Jolla, and the seaside walk is one of teh most beautiful in the world as well.
Look for sea lions and harbor seals both in the water and on the more protected beaches (in fact, they have taken over one of the more picturesque little beaches, and this makes for great, reliable viewing up close.
Downtown La Jolla, overlooking the magnificent bay, has some wonderful and unique shops and art galleries. It also has a great selection of restauarnts, from fast food to world-class.

La Jolla Cove
Make it a day by bringing swim suits, towels, and a volleyball or frisbee - once you get to La Jolla, you're going to want to stay for a while. Throw in a lunch at one of the mid-priced resaturants and some art gallery browsing and shopping for souveniers, and you've got a perfect La Jolla day.
La Jolla has a feel taht is a world away from that of nearby downtown San Diego (though in fact it is within the city limits). You'll think you have been transplanted to Carmel or Monterrey, yet you're still just a 15 minute drive from downtown.
For kids, the Scripps Aquarium makes a fun diversion. Not too large, it is located in a spectacular spot along the sandstone cliffs and has exhibits that will interest everyone from toddlers to adults.
Another fun spot in town are the cliffs above Black's Beach, just down from the UC San Diego campus on teh north edge of La Jolla. Look for hang gliders and parasails along the tops of teh cliffs on any non-stormy day (which is most days in San Diego!)
